Hello Flávio! Could you describe yourself in a few words and tell us how you started drawing?
Hello! I´m a brazilian designer. I graduated in 2007 and I´ve been working with graphic and motion design since then.
I started drawing comics as a child and never stopped. I remember the first one that I liked, it was a black Spiderman that I made in the back of the school notebook.

How would you explain your style of illustration?
Well, i like colors, hand drawn type and wierd connections between the theme and the final image. Maybe that´s my style.
What are your creation processes? What part in the work process is the most difficult?
I usually think about everything and imagine it all just in my head. When I´m satisfied with it, I make a simple sketch just to see if it could work. Then I go after photos to use as a reference, or I start making it on paper. After that I scan the drawing and use Photoshop and Illustrator to make it happen. Sometimes a theme sticks in my mind for weeks and I´ll only make the illustration when the idea has reached a good point. But this can change a lot depending on the project.
For professional works I use my experience on the personal projects to get to the best result I can.
The most difficult part is to make the transition from the imagination to the real thing. When the sketch is done, the fun begins.

The illustration “Bob vs. Killer Pandas” is amazing! tell us a little bit more about the creative process.
It all started when I received an invitation to participate on Computer Arts Projects Brazil magazine about games.
I had to create a cover for the game “Bob vs Killer Pandas”. I tried to make a different aproach on the subject, I didn´t want to make the pandas like monsters or anything like that. So I thought about making Bob a luchador, and in the illustration, the pandas are really small, or maybe Bob is a giant. I liked this idea because it makes the gamer think about what genre of game this might be.
I imagined the scene and my girlfriend took some photos of myself acting as Bob. After I selected the best shot, I opened it in Photoshop and made all the drawing using it as a direct reference. It was really fun to create the costume and add all the pandas. I am really happy with the final piece.

In which point do you think technology can help an artist?
The “Bob vs Kiler Pandas” illustration is a great example on how it can help anyone. With the possibility of using a photo that I produced, it was really faster to get where I wanted. It would take some time to adjust the right angle, and the proportions of Bob´s body starting from a sketch on paper.
Which draw was the most difficult to do?
The one about the movie Ragin Bull was a hard one. It took me some time to get to that final composition since the movie have a strong visual. To make it work I imagined it as a frame of a opening sequence of a movie.

What would you tell for those who are starting in this area?
Experimenting different processes is very important. Try to make something just on paper, then try something just on the computer. This will make easier to think about how are you going to make that particular image that is on your mind.
Your favorite artists?
From the past it would be Van Gogh, Schiele and Paul Klee.
From the present it would be Kako, McBess, Nando Costa ,João Ruas and Derby Blue.

Your computer?
I use a PC.

What is your favorite food?
Pizza!
What kind of music do you like?
I listen to lots of things, from rock n´roll to samba. But the top bands for me would be Radiohead, Arcade Fire and The Walkmen.
Do you have any hobbies outside of art and computing?
I love movies, music and videogames (Nintendo DS and PC games).
Any final comments?
Thanks for your attention! Peace!
