Gabriel Suchwolski

www.microbians.com

Creative Designer | Madrid, Spain

Tell us a little bit about Microbians?
At a personal level, I work at “microbians” that is my personal Web site, and where I publish my illustrations and projects in Flash.
Microbians appeared a long time ago when I began to draw a series of very rare characters, every one with its own characteristics and history. I baptized them as “microbians”, since it fitted very much with the idea of infinite microbes in a microcosmos.
Much later (about four years ago) I decieded to made my personal site. I registered the name “microbians” and created an a experimental site where to show my projects.

Do you have any new projects coming up soon that you can tell us about?
I’am now working had by hand with Jean Duprez (www.durpezdolores.com) for a video project, also expositions and creating new content for microbians.

Microbians inspires a lot of designers, where you look for inspiration?
I get influenced by the realtime of each day, the people around me, my friends and their opinions. All the things that happen me. In the graphic sens I am influenced a lot with comics, I principaly like the style of two big comic drawers, the french Moebius, and Katsuhiro Otomo. I thing I get influenced in the sens I try to express the idea of movement and a history using a concrete concept.
I get also influenced with a kind of themes like “genetics” or “revolutions”… the power of cientifics could take in a genetic-dominated-world… this kind of ideas.

You should be very proud in seeing several sites using “chromeless”. You waited for that an expected success?
Not really, I did not expect that massive use of the script. Also taking into consideration that the first chromeless was an experiment.
But now I’m out of the chromeless stuff I helped to open a workgroup at www.chromeless.org conducted by Mariano Klein who is the guy that is making now the noew stuff related with chromeless stuff.
That’s beacuse I’m trying to drop all the programming stuff and center my mind in graphics and motion. Programming is for me a tool to solve little problems but not a concept.

For when there will be a version for mac?
I think it could be difficult to create a MAC version. I can’t see one in the near time.

How would you describe your design style?
I love Japan & asian styles. Well my style (I have one? he he) … Oh well , I cant say it, I like to draw and I’m a persitent guy. If something doesn’t turn out they way I like, I try again and again. I like to comunicate something with the illustrations and work, more of the time I try to comunicate concepts to make people think.

What programs do you use to create your illustrations?
Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash

Besides Microbians, what other projects you are working now?
On a personal side, well I would like some day to lauch thegeneticshop.com and radicalmonkey.com. At present I’m working as a editor at newstoday feed, I like to surf the net. I’m also working with Jean Duprez a new project (a secret one he he…) so stay tuned.

When did you start with graphic design?
I start working/leraning by my self from a long time ago. All that I know is self taught. I try to teach myself something new each day and I work all the time.
I start working in the Internet seven years or so ago, as a Creative Director in some of the principal web agencies here in Spain.

How many hours/day do you spend on your computer?
I get up at 8 o’clock and go to office, 8 hours of work each day. But when I arrive home I can easily work another 4 hours.

Do you prefer technologically advanced sites or sites with simple but good design?
Simple ones with good design/concept.

Do you have any hobbies outside of digital art and computing?
Yes, make classical contemporary music.

What is your favorite food?
Apple strudel

What kind of music do you like?
Electronic music, classical contemporary, hip-hop.

What are your plans for the future?
Make money with my personal works, and try to have no boss, so work for my self.

If you were to advice a newly educated designer, what would you advice or recommend them to focus on?
First is the concept, next the production.

Where do you see the future of design going on the internet?
Internet as web pages will be in the background, at the surface will be more motion graphics, video, since the current Internet is like newspapers compared with tv, as it will be in the future, plus it will have the response of the user in realtime.

Any final comments?
Don’t worry be happy
