Freelance Designer, Illustrator | New York

Tell us about your background?
I was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. After graduating from high school, my family has moved to The States. I studied graphic design from F.I.T. in NYC, and graduated in May 2003. I’ve been drawing since I was a kid. I had enjoyed doing it the most, so I decided to go to an art school. I’ve been freelancing since I was a junior, experiences include such as designing contents for the site of NYLON magazine, and creating graphics for shoe designer Kristen Lee. I do freelance woks in both illust and design. Currently I provide illustrations for Vogue Girl Korea, and design ads for Pageonline occasionally. I just finished collaborating on T-shirts designs for DaveDenis, which was great. I learned about patterns, learning new things from work experiences is fascinating*.

Have you had artistic studies and was it useful for you?
I’d learned basic drawings since I was little, using mediums like pencil, gouache, and watercolors. In college, I think I learned more from other people from classes. There were people from different backgrounds, and counties, and it has widened my eyes to get interested in different cultures. And I learned to think differently, since I spent much time coming up with ideas.
I still try to see what’s out there by reading magazines, or going to galleries.

How would you explain your style of illustration?
I like to show a story in abstract ways rather than 100% literal, like a poem. It’s my personal preference. I am very attracted to abstractness.
I am also inspired by subject matters that can be found in people’s everyday lives, and fashion, too. I think I was influenced unconsciously by fabrics and mannequins from FIT hallways. I use layers and line drawings most of the time.

What programs do you use to create your illustrations?
I prefer hand drawings, thus I usually use pen, paper, acrylics, watercolors, or markers, then edit from Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. I do entirely digitalized images time to time, too.

What are your creation processes?
Spend some time to come up with an idea, research if needed, draw on a paper, scan in, then usually edit a little with Photoshop or Illustrator.
