Savio Fonseca

Cargo / saviofonseca
Art Director | Sao Paulo, Brazil
Hello Savio! Tell us a little bit about your background?
Hey, everybody. Well, I always had great interest in visual things. Once again a school friend told me that he had taken a course in Photoshop. So, he taught me some things, searched on the internet how to work with it and I started to do some work on the house.

One year after, I made a personal portfolio with work and got an internship at an agency called Finitri Communication here in Sao Paulo, where I made great progress in diagramming, design, online and offline.

One year after, I sent the portfolio to another agency Ideal Interactive, where I managed to learn a lot about online campaigns, and after one year and a half, I was called to join the online group at JWT to work with great brands like Ford, Cadbury Adams, Shell, among others.

I learned a lot about advertising, to do a campaign from start to finish, the importance to many things beyond the visual – organization, teamwork and had contact with different media. One year after I left JWT to go to a design studio, Grafikonstruct in order to have a longer learning design, because it is a studio, interface, art, layout, and production, which has a higher value, and could follow the production from beginning to end. Now, I’m at Wunderman, integrating the team online.

What is your typical design process like?
Well, when I start to think on a concept, sometimes I have a visual in my mind, sometimes I try to find some cool reference and think about how to transform the customer’s need into something “touchable”, but basically my process lies in understanding customer need – seek referrals – to establish a style – layout.
It is always important to have visual references in a project, even if they want to do something new, I prefer to have references to not lose focus.

The work “Nokia Ovi” is beautiful! Tell us a little bit more about the creative process.
Oh, thanks! I made this job for Nokia in association with the copywriter, Tamiris Gomes. OVI Maps is a map application for Nokia phones. We found at fairy tales a good support for the campaign, because in many of them there is always a lost character or in doubt to choose a direction. So we thought that Nokia OVI Maps would have changed their lives.

Tells us about your most special projects and the reason why it’s so important for you.
Nokia OVI Maps. I try to do my best in all projects I work to. Another work that I really appreciate is a freelance that I made for Lexus in a canadian agency, called Jam3. Despite the short time I had to design the project, it was a nice result, and won a site of the day at FWA.l
Where do you look for inspiration?
First, the love of my family and my girlfriend Mayara, also of every agency that I come in and feel that there really is my place. But every job I try to have a kind of inspiration, every job I try to cast a different way.
Do you think the university is important is who is in the beginning of design? And what the message you could say to the young professionals?
The university is a big deal for everyone looking to work with advertising and design. Not just for learning, but also for contacts that are made in college. There are lots of successful professionals who were not trained as well. For me, the basis at the beginning is the most important thing in a career. So, for everyone starting right now I may say: it is necessary to know if that is what you want. Do with love and that will work.

Do you intend to stay living in Brazil?
Yes, I want to win so much even in the domestic market, the short time I had a proposal for a country of Europe, but nothing too serious, for now it will stay in Brazil.
Your favorite professionals?
Cisma, Mato Atom, Mariana Bukvic, Atila Meireles, Adriel Nunes, Douglas Alves, Seth Weisfeld, Nando Costa and my friends Danilo Rodrigues, Francisco Andrade (Chicoh), Paulo Carvalho (Feijão), Raul Palhares and Tamiris Gomes.
What equipment, software and tools do you use to produce your works?
Use the MacOSX platform, usually Photoshop, Illustrator, and sometimes I try some 3D software.

What is your favorite food?
Fondue, Rib Outback and pizza (but not in the agency). LOL.
What kind of music do you like?
I listen to everything, just came out from my head Astrix and Seu Jorge.
Do you have any hobbies outside of art and computing?
Well, I like hanging out with friends, running, practise some GYM. Now I’m thinking of buying a camera.
What are your plans for the future?
Professionally, I want to create cool designs, meet cool people, and contribute to the growth of the brands. Personally, I remain happy with my girlfriend and my family.
Any final comments?
Study, study and study, be humble, know the time to talk and listen more. And understand that consistency of work comes with time.

Thanks Savio Fonseca for having taken his time to make this interview with us
