1) GIVE A DESCRIPTION OF YOURSELF IN A FEW WORDS
Well my name is David Rondel Cambou (drc), I'm a French graphic designer.
I studied at the Superior art school of Paris in France. Graduated since 1996.
And also a junky.
2) WHAT IS - ACCORDING TO YOU - THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING ART AND DESIGN IN SCHOOL?
I have to say that I’m more close to an autodidact, but the school learned me 2 important things: Fonts and Colours.
3) YOU'RE NOW 29 YEARS OLD, WORKING AS A SENIOR ART DIRECTOR @ NURUN IN PARIS. HOW DID YOUR CAREER EVOLVE?
Well this is quiet funny, because I m leaving Nurun in 20 days exactly now. Can’t wait!
My girl and I are getting freelancer, and we are opening a design studio named HELLOHIKIMORI
But well I’ve been in Nurun since 4 years now I’ve been art director in France during 1 year after I went in London during 2 years as a creative director of nurun UK
And back in France as an art director during this last year…
4) WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO BECOME A FREELANCER AND NOT JOIN ANOTHER STUDIO?
Well when I came back in France I receive a proposition from Hi-res, I mean this kind of proposition makes you think a lot!
But I met my girl and we started working together and that makes me think it s the best team we ever made so
That s why…
5) DO YOU THINK THAT A FREELANCER HAS MORE CREATIVITY LIBERTIES THAN SOMEONE WHO IS IN A STUDIO ? WHY?
That depends a lot of the kind of the client.
But maybe when you are on your own you just have the limits you fixed to you and the client also but you have nobody in the middle (what is generally the case when you are in agencies…)

6) WHEN DID YOU FELT YOUR CAREER HAVING A BOOST?
I think it happened when I decided to create my own space in 1998 – Overage4design
I decided to create it not to show people my work as a portfolio but more as a place where I can experiment with no corporate rules, just one rule Freedom.
And what surprised me is that I received lots of mails for from everywhere…
I was not sure yet I preferred working in a company, and I still continue to work on my personal project…
7) WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND O4D?
O4D is the base of my work. I mainling work on feelings
What I try to say in O4D is a life story.
You are a designer and it‘s quiet hard to be happy with what you do, what you are etc…
For my part I am never proud of my work.
In O4D the main word is to accept what you are, we are, what we do, so do it for you etc….
I always feel so unhappy about me like a fever all the time telling me “Work again again and again you lazy boy…”(stop Joost please !)
Sometimes you need to explore, to write to draw to animate in order to express all your feelings you have inside…
O4D - a kind of a therapy? Maybe…
8) WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF VIEW OF THE FRENCH GRAPHIC DESIGN FIELD?
Well, the French design field is a bit rude; people in this field are a bit too serious
But hopefully I got some real friends in it that are just too talented simple and trustable.
Scien&Klor (123K), Arnaud Mercier (elixir studio), the praktica team, Jk from Renascent for example.
But to be more precise, I think the French design scene need more advertising, French people in the design world are not very popular or recognized as they might be. That’s my feeling…
9) WHAT IS YOUR SOLUTION AGAINST THIS UNPOPULARITY?
BD4D! by praktica. is what has to be the French design community. With this I mean in the spirit.
10) AS A SENIOR ART DIRECTOR, WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST: CREATING/BUILDING BY YOURSELF OR COMMAND PEOPLE (STAFF)?
Coordinate is a really interesting experience and you need it for your own experience.
But I definitely prefer to create, design. That s my work and that s why I m quitting nurun
My girl is art director also and we want to work seriously where we are the best….. In creation! |
|
11) TELL ME HOW YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN AND WHAT YOUR ROLE WILL BE IN IT.
What I can say is that the graphic design is becoming more and more precise.
The young designers who are coming are more and more talented…
I hope for myself getting more times to contribute to the design scene thru BD4D. Surfstation, Praktica…IDFLUX…
But I really want to work on pure design, on the meaning of it.
12) HAS YOUR LOVE FOR VISUAL COMMUNICATION EVOLVED SINCE YOU BEGUN?
Definitely, and hopefully for me :)
Just watching around …
Society evolves and you are evolving in the same time
Also I’ve to say that I travelled a lot and that is the most interesting experience I had!

13) YOUR INFLUENCES?
My Main influence is Salvador Dali, for colours combinations.
Books because I m a print lover …
But life and city are so strong influences just watch the street and you will find all the codes of actual web design…
14) TALK ABOUT YOUR STYLE, HOW IT CAME, HOW IT HAS EVOLVED.
At the beginning it was very 45°degrees style, due to my studies…
I evolved starting mixing vector art, real photos and fonts.
My work is base on messages; I want people watching it got the feeling like they hate it or love it - when they just remember it.
I’m actually really working on fonts and trying to be more and more simple in my style to be more powerful with strong messages but the heart of my style is still the same for me…Feelings!
15) WHAT ABOUT COPYING WHAT IS SAID TO BE TRENDY?
Well you’ll be trendy during 2 days after you’ll be out. Good luck to you to come back after that.
16) YOU ARE ALSO POSTING FOR NEWS BOARDS LIKE COMPUTERLOVE, BD4D… WHAT IS YOUR POINT OF VIEW ABOUT THOSE NEWS SITES?
I’ve just quit CL because of different point of view, I wasn t feeling free at all so…
I definitely love BD4D for me is one of the most powerful news portal out there.
With Designiskinky, praktica, surfstation, K10k, and pixelsurgeon…
In Between, news portals are very important to me that’s where came from the community.

23) HOW IMPORTANT IS HUMAN CONTACT FOR YOU AND FOR THIS JOB?
Very important that’s changing everything
Ok we are working on a virtual world but talking with real friends or clients are definitely a real inspiration for working
24) ANY ADVICE?

Create with pride.
